DISCOVERING THE FUNDAMENTALS
Finding your true north - trusting your instincts
and navigating the business fundamentals

Being an Explorer is not a consolation prize. It is the beginning of one of the most creatively and financially rewarding journeys you can take as a designer.
But it can also feel overwhelming. There is a lot of noise out there about how to get started, what software to buy, which platform to use, whether you are talented enough, whether the market is too crowded. Most of it is not useful. Some of it will send you in the wrong direction entirely.
What you need right now is not more information. You need a clear, honest path forward built by someone who has been in this industry for nearly 50 years and has guided designers at every stage of the climb.
That is exactly what this page is.

Explorers are individuals who actively seek out new ideas, techniques, and experiences in surface pattern design (SPD). They are curious and willing to experiment.

Learn the core principles of design, including color theory, composition, and basic patterns. Begin experimenting with simple layouts and patterns while exploring personal preferences and style.
Gain a basic understanding of surface pattern design as a business. Research various business models such as licensing, print-on-demand, and product-based sales, and develop an initial idea of which avenue interests you.
Develop a healthy mindset by accepting that creativity is not linear. Cultivate patience with yourself, celebrate small wins, and practice resilience when facing setbacks. This is the foundation for long-term success.
Begin developing your ability to communicate your creative vision. This includes articulating your ideas, presenting them to peers or mentors, and being open to feedback to improve your designs.

As an Explorer your job is to build a foundation that everything else will stand on. Designers who skip this stage almost always have to come back to it later, and it costs them far more time the second time around.
Here is what that foundation looks like:
Understanding color, composition, and the design principles that make patterns commercially viable rather than just beautiful.
Knowing the three paths to income in surface pattern design, setting up your business correctly from the start, and building the financial habits that keep a creative practice alive.
Beginning the process of identifying and developing a creative identity that is distinctly yours and positioned for the market you want to serve.
Building the creative confidence and professional habits that will determine how quickly you move through this stage and into the next one.

Guided learning paths provide accountability, community support, and expert feedback that accelerate results far beyond individual study. We provide both types of study.
