ELEVATING OTHERS
Becoming the compass for others; sharing your knowledge, leading the industry, and building a lasting legacy.

Guides have built something real and lasting. Your focus now extends beyond your own practice. Your experience, perspective, and hard-won knowledge have genuine value to the designers who are still climbing, and you are in a position to share it.
Industry leadership, mentorship, and legacy building are where your energy belongs now.
You did not get here by accident. You built this through years of creative discipline, business learning, resilience through setbacks, and consistent effort when results were slow to come.
Now you are asking a different kind of question. Not how do I grow my practice, but how do I use what I have built to help others do the same. How do I ensure that the knowledge I carry does not stay locked inside my own studio.
This page is for designers who are ready to lead.

Guides provide mentorship and direction, sharing their knowledge and experience to help others develop their skills in surface pattern design. They have internalized their craft, are recognized in their professional community, and are actively contributing to the growth and advancement of the SPD industry.
To be working at the Guide stage, you should have a working knowledge of the following:
• An established, recognized professional practice with a proven track record
• Deep expertise across multiple areas of surface pattern design and the SPD business landscape
• Experience navigating the full range of business models: licensing, product-based sales, platform selling, and client work
• The ability to teach, mentor, and communicate design and business concepts clearly to others
• A professional network and reputation within the SPD industry

Maintaining a healthy, sustainable lifestyle that balances creativity, business, and personal fulfillment. Prioritizing self-care and continued personal growth to ensure longevity in your career and your capacity to give to others.
Scaling your business or exploring new ventures. Developing a product line, expanding your licensing reach, transitioning into new markets, or building educational frameworks that extend your impact beyond your own studio.
At this stage, your design proficiency is established. Your focus shifts to teaching your process, sharing your creative journey, and helping others develop their own personal styles. You are mentoring rather than discovering.
Your focus is now on how to share the prosperity you have built with others. Guiding those you mentor on creating their own pathways to abundance, fostering a legacy of not just creative success but financial empowerment within the design community.
Strengthening your role as a guide by fostering empathy, collaboration, and community at the highest level. Whether through mentoring, creating collaborative projects, or building community, your influence extends to helping others thrive.

As a Guide, your job is to extend your impact beyond your own studio. The skills, systems, and knowledge you have built are most powerful when they help other designers get there faster and with less unnecessary struggle.
Here is what that looks like:
Developing frameworks, resources, or teaching approaches that transmit what you know in forms that are genuinely useful to designers at earlier stages of the climb.
Building direct mentoring relationships that give emerging designers the honest, experienced guidance that is often the missing piece in their development.
Contributing to the conversations, communities, and standards that shape the surface pattern design industry. Speaking, writing, collaborating, and leading in ways that advance the field.
Creating something that outlasts any single project or client relationship. Whether that is a body of work, an educational program, a community, or a professional standard, your legacy is what you leave behind for the designers who come after you.
Maintaining the personal practices that allow you to continue giving at this level. A Guide who burns out helps no one. Your sustainability is part of your responsibility.
