Part 3: Pitch, License & Repeat
You put in the work. The collections are finished, the mockups look great, and the files are organized. And then the portfolio sits in a folder, because nobody explained what happens next. Which brands accept submissions? Who do you email, and what do you say? What do you send when an art director says yes? What do you do when they say nothing at all? Part 4: Lettering on Repeat
How hand lettering changes everything.
A beautiful floral pattern might be licensed for fabric or wallpaper. That same pattern with coordinating hand-lettered phrases can reach greeting cards, journals, wall art, pillows, apparel, stationery, and gift wrap.
But lettering that looks like a first draft does not get licensed. Wobbly strokes, uneven spacing, and the wrong style for the market all signal amateur work, even when the pattern behind them is strong.

I've spent more than 50 years as an artist. I studied with the Bay Area Figurative Movement as a child, worked as a Color Me Beautiful consultant in England, served as a makeup colorist for major networks, painted pastel portraits for over 35 years, and taught color theory at art schools across the UK.
